About

Every year, Portland State University’s civil engineering students compete in the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Student Steel Bridge Competition. This competition challenges students to design, fabricate, and construct a steel bridge that meets client specifications. The model is tested for weight, style, strength, and ability to resist deflection, among other things.

The Steel Bridge Competition affords PSU’s civil engineering students an opportunity to exercise valuable skills: applying real-world engineering principles gaining hands-on knowledge of the design and fabrication process networking and competing against rival colleges. Future engineers are offered a chance to practice solving common engineering issues related to project management, cost, safety, aesthetics, special constraints, material properties, and serviceability.
